The Integration of Equity: Why It Is Important & How to Achieve It

Presenter: Ms. Keisha Jones

Description: Diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace have always mattered, but recently, many of us have recognized the opportunity for change now. This change for many of us is no longer an option but has become essential. To understand DEI, one must first understand the meaning and significance of all three variables: diversity, equity, and inclusion. Each component is necessary to drive real change at an individual and organizational level. DEI is for everyone and must involve employees at every level of an organization, regardless of their differences. The implementation of equity must be intentional and well-designed. Leaders must thoroughly examine policies, procedures, and environments to determine if things are truly equitable. In this session, I will discuss the importance of integrating equity in all the things we do as we do it and not after we do it. Putting equity at the heart of what you are doing could potentially have greater benefits than the thing you are doing.

3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Title: IPEDS Moving Forward: 2022-23 and Beyond
Presenter: Dr. Vincent Castano, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Fayetteville Technical CC
Description: As the movement for greater accountability in higher education advances forward, IPEDS (Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System) remains one of the primary data tools for collecting student-level data among colleges and universities. Every two years, the National Center for Education Statistics adjusts the kinds of data that we must report. Where does the process begin to make these changes? Are there opportunities to provide feedback to proposed changes before they become obligatory? After spending five years as an IPEDS educator and current keyholder for the past 13 years, and serving on technical review panels with NCES, I am happy to share where to begin and how to prepare your institution for these changes. Data collection is not a uniform process across the 58 community colleges; however, there are certain rules that must be followed from a statutory perspective. These rules may change, and it is the responsibility of the institution to remain up to date. Regardless, if you are a veteran to federal reporting or brand new, this session will help you prepare for upcoming data collection cycles.

Title: Promising Practices from Across the State: How NC community colleges are revamping to address retention issues
Presenter: Emily Thomas, Policy Analyst, EdNC

Description: Meeting enrollment goals, student success, and completion all are tied to retention. But retaining community college students is complex. Community colleges enroll some of the most diverse student populations, many of whom experience a myriad of challenges that make academic success more difficult. In this general session, we’ll explore national and statewide retention data, the challenges of community colleges experience in retaining students, and how leaders from across the state are putting systems, processes, and people in place to aid retention efforts.

Bio: Emily Thomas is a policy analyst for EducationNC. Born and raised in Western North Carolina, Emily started her college journey at Caldwell Community College. After graduating from CCC&TI, Emily went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in organizational/public communication from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in communication from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Emily has over 10 years of higher education experience. Much of her career has been spent in enrollment, advising, and teaching within the communication discipline at two-year and four-year public and private institutions. We look forward to a great 2018 CCPRO Conference.  Our organization is reaching outside of our group by partnering with NCCCS Conference.  It is the goal of the partnership to have a pre-conference CCPRO meeting and weave CCPRO focused one-hour presentations throughout the NCCCS general sessions.

CCPRO has a goal this year to have a strong IE/IR presence at the NCCCS general sessions.  Any and all presentations should be submitted to the NCCCS presentation selection committee when a call for proposals is distributed.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to talk with any of the executive committee members.  They will be more than happy to discuss your presentation ideas.

Workshop:

Automating the Nuts and Bolts of IE and Getting Results Fast

Location: Victoria C

Description:

This session will present a suite of Microsoft Access databases that automate the assessment process for planning, student learning outcomes (SLO), academic program reviews, and administrative self-studies. This suite’s effectiveness will include an overview and demonstration of each system, followed by an in-depth view of the student learning outcomes process. In fall 2012 MCC held the first annual all-college SLO finding that was on one “of significance.” The “show and tell” was enlightening in many ways and especially rewarding from an IE perspective to observe faculty enthusiasm, ownership of the process and discussions of student learning from new lenses. Two years later, after initial faculty resistance, the SLO process has evolved as a new mechanism to help faculty improve student learning. This presentation will describe how automation and other activities fostered MCC’s growth in getting to the heart of the process — student learning.

Normed Reference Assessments: Accountability, Course Placement, Degree Completion, or Student Learning

Location: Grandover East

Description:

Using nationally normed tests for accountability makes sense in theory but can they satisfy the mission for both improving student learning and reporting accountability measures? Since testing often impacts student’s lives, is it fair to base academic decisions on one measure? Striving to achieve good test scores for accountability can have counterproductive effects on student learning. This session explores when and if norm-referenced tests are useful.

Community College Persistence: Issues & Solutions Emerge from the Data

Location: Victoria B

Persistence to graduation is a complex, multi-faceted process with no easy fix … or is it?  Although some risk factors are beyond our control as open-door institutions, numerous well-designed studies reveal low-cost factors with profound impact on persistence.  In addition to identifying variables with positive and negative association with persistence, this presentation will look at national and statewide community college persistence trend data for various demographic categories.  With wide-ranging variation in persistence rates among NC community colleges, strategies associated with high persistence at top-ranking NC community colleges will be shared.
